My journey as an artist began with my gardens. My palettes of choice are flowers and vegetables, which has led to many awards in floral and horticultural competitions. I have always been creative but while caring for my mother with dementiaI started sketching and drawing my flowers then moved on to watercolors and gradually found acrylics. .
During the pandemic, I started picking up beach treasures (trash) on my daily walks, and began adding them to my art.
I have been fortunate to take classes at North River, the Arts Society, the South Shore Art Center, and the Scituate Art Association. All these workshops and classes with several South Shore and Boston-area artists helped me gain skills and confidence!
Painting Plein Air with the Tuesday Painters has helped guide my creativity and has given me the courage to submit my work to many juried shows. Painting at Fridays’ Open Studio at NRAS has brought a whole new level of artists into my creative world. My biggest struggle as an artist is keeping my studio organized. All (8) eight of my grandchildren love and enjoy playing in “Nana’s painting room” that they call the Zoo!!
I paint with acrylics, inks, and some oil sticks. I create and collage with paper and found objects, especially hard plastics found on the beach , marsh, and Scituate coastline.
What’s the story behind your work?
While I was raising my children, I always supported the art scene in the Boston area, especially on the South Shore, by collecting affordable art. Around 20 years ago, I started taking art classes and creating my own works.
What do you hope people will feel when they see it?
JOY.
How does your work create community or bring people together?
I paint with two different groups, and we all share our process and our passions. I open my shed/studio many weekends in the spring and most summer days when I am weeding or tending my gardens. I encourage everyone to stop by and check out what’s new and exciting in the shed or in my gardens
Who helped you along the way?
The art teachers who are now my friends.
How do you give back/support others?
Buy their art, go to their openings, go to galleries together, share our processes and supplies, and most importantly, encourage them all to create.
