Oil, Acrylic
As an interpretative oil and acrylic painter, I rely on reference only as a jumping-off point. My subject matter ranges from figures and animals to landscape and structures. Approaching each work with an abstract underpainting, I then build layers of charcoal, oil pastel, and paint. I focus on light, color, shape, and design without detail. The process of applying and removing paint becomes a cycle of reworking and discovering new directions.
Working on several canvases at once, each at a different stage, breathes new life and energy into the art. I consider each painting an experiment and search for new ideas to make a visually interesting statement.
I make representations of what I see and feel through paint on canvas.
What’s the story behind your work?
My work has evolved from a careful and controlled approach to relying on my intuition. I paint freely with conviction and push boundaries open to new possibilities.
What do you hope people will feel when they see it?
I hope people feel drawn into the mood, mystery and story within the art.
How does your work create community or bring people together?
Painting nature and seascapes taps into the common theme of living on the ocean.
Who helped you along the way?
I have received help from various art school teachers and mentors along the way, which has advanced my drawing and painting skills.
How do you give back/support others?
I taught basic drawing and painting to children, teens, and adults for many years. I donate a few paintings a year to fundraisers or charitable groups.
